Painted by Henry Ossawa Tanner in 1893, The Banjo Lesson is a more realistic and dark side of America. During this time, racism and prejudice ran rampant throughout homes, communities and art. In a time where African-Americans were usually depicted in non-flattering ways, Mr. Tanner gave us realism over stereotypes.
